I’ll venture off the usual path a bit today to do a quick review of an absolutely wonderful resource for guitarists.
I’ve been using my copy of Guy’s Grids — an excellent book about guitar chords — for several weeks now, and I’m very pleased with it.
I’m entirely self-taught, and Guy’s book has literally opened up entire new worlds of sound for me… learning the relationships between chords has now became easy because of the way he presents them.
Regarding price, I thought it was high until the HUGE book arrived in the mail. Given the quality of the paper and printing and physical size of the book (as well as the care with which its packaged to make its journey in the mail), I’m frankly surprised Guy can sell it for $65 and still make much of a profit.
After receiving the book and before using it much, I felt good about supporting a self-publisher who had gone to this much work and who obviously took great pride in what he had created and was now selling.
In other forums I’ve seen an owner or two of Guy’s Grids complaining about the book’s size and weight, but, frankly, I personally like having a a 228-page, 11″ x 17″ book with chord diagrams large enough to see easily with my aging boomer’s eyes. Finally, no more squinting and hunching into contorted positions over my guitar trying to figure out the fingering of a chord from a diagram the size of Tom Thumb’s pecker. Hallelujah!
Additionally, Guy is very quick and responsive to customer emails with questions.
I’m happy with this purchase and am learning a lot. I just hope I have enough years left to get a chance to master half of the chords and their progressions and relationships that are now always available to me in Guy’s Grids.
Guy’s website is at http://guysgrids.com. I have no financial interest in promoting this book, by the way. I just like it a lot and find it very useful.
