How to Be Quiet

For this week”s meditation, we once again turn East to learn from Chuang-Tzu, who wrote…

As regards the quietude of the sage, he is not quiet because quietness is said to be good. He is quiet because the multitude of things cannot disturb his quietude.

This week, focus on not letting the multitude of things in your life (too much work, too much noise, too many responsibilities, etc, etc, etc) disturb your quietude.

Perhaps reading what I just wrote has you thinking in response something like, “What quietude? Chet, are you nuts? I don’t have any quietude in the madhouse that’s my life!”

Well, I beg to differ with you.

You do have quietude.

You just need to slow down enough so you can dip into its calm, still well of silence, which is always – always -there for you.

Do that now. Take at least three slow and deep breaths, focusing on the pauses between breaths.

After a few more slow deep breaths, you should feel your consciousness shift.

Ah, there it is.

Your quietude.

And it’s yours for the asking, all the time, every single moment of your wonderful life.

During his remaining years on planet earth, Chet Day wants to amuse himself as much as possible while still staying out of the Poor House. Fed up with political correctness and having to work for a living, he's devoting the last of his life energy to writing as much as he can.
